At Midnight Breakfast, we always strive to publish writing that casts the world in a new light, and that taps into the kinds of conversations worth having. Over the last few years, it’s often felt like the world has descended into darkness, particularly in the US. Like so many publications working to illuminate and hold accountable the moral bankruptcy of the current American administration, and to amplify the voices of those affected by its inhumane policies, we’re refusing to let things go without a fight. After a long hiatus, we’re pleased to announce we’ll be publishing Issue Fifteen at the end of October, just in time for the US midterm elections and Halloween. We’re calling the issue “America and Other Nightmares.”
Our reading period for this special, themed issue will be from Monday, August 13th until Friday, August 31st, and during this time, we welcome original, previously unpublished fiction and nonfiction submissions. (Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please email us if your piece is accepted elsewhere.) All submitted work should fit the theme “America and Other Nightmares,” which is inspired by the horror of modern-day America, but not limited to it. We’re looking for pieces that resonate with the state of the world as it is, pieces that shine a light on the social, ethical, and moral injustices facing people today. We’re interested in everything from realism to the speculative and uncanny, from traditional fiction and nonfiction narratives to more experimental forms of writing. We’re especially interested in work by writers whose voices have historically been relegated to the margins. Please take a look at our archive to get a feel for the kinds of pieces we love.
Great, where do I send my work?
All submissions should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Are you on Submittable?
Not at this time.
What’s your word count?
It varies, but generally we like pieces that are at least 1,200 words and prefer work that is longer. To get a feel for the length of our pieces, feel free to poke around in our archive. (Every issue is available for free!) We do publish flash fiction and nonfiction; if submitting, please send 2-3 flash pieces for consideration.
Do you pay contributors?
Yes. Right now we’re able to offer $50 for written work.
Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
We do, but we ask that you please email us if the piece is accepted elsewhere.
How soon should I expect to hear back from you about my submission?
We have a very small reading team, and try to get back to people as soon as we can. We strive to respond to everyone within 30 days. If it’s been longer and you haven’t heard from us, please feel free to check in.
How many pieces can I send at once?
Please only send one piece, unless it’s accepted elsewhere and you’d like us to consider another during our reading period. Otherwise, please wait until you hear back from us before sending another piece for consideration.
Do you accept poetry, interview, or book review submissions?
Unfortunately, at this time we do not.
What if I’d like to submit some art?
We solicit artists to create original work inspired by a specific piece we’re publishing. Right now, we are currently closed to any unsolicited art submissions.
